A simple request from our Wrawby Hall Care Home in Brigg, has sparked something truly special!  After a Facebook post requesting pen pals for residents, the home received no less than 103 responses, and counting, from people keen to connect.

The appeal centred around a simple idea of helping residents form friendships outside of the care home and strengthen links with the wider community.  The team has to date, received 103 responses, which has far exceeded expectations.  Messages came from a real mix of ages, from children as young and nine through to older adults and from both local and national locations including, London, Leeds and Pontefract.  Both residents and staff have loved seeing the enthusiasm as the letters began to arrive.

One resident, Barbara, now has two pen pals, nine year old Lacie and an older lady, Julia.  She often re-reads their letters and treasures the fact that they have taken time out of their day to write to her.

Danielle Naylor, Home Manager at Wrawby Hall commented: “We hoped a few people might get involved, but the response has been incredible.  Seeing the smiles on residents’ faces when their letters arrive has been so special.  Some have received photographs and they often carry them around all day and show them to other residents.

“It’s such a simple idea but it’s had such a positive impact on mood, confidence and overall wellbeing of our residents.  I am humbled by how supportive our local community and wider network are.”

The project will continue, with more pen pals still coming forward to get involved.  For anyone considering taking part in the future, the message from the team is simple, a letter might seem small, but it can make a whole world of difference.
